Andrew Mackay studied at Loughborough College of Art and Design, and has been a freelance natural history artist and illustrator for more than 20 years. His work has appeared in many books including The Birds of the Western Palearctic, RSPB's Birds of Britain and Europe, Birds of North America (American Museum of Natural History), A Field Guide to the Birds of South-East Asia, Watching British Dragonflies and several of the Pocket Nature series published by Dorling Kindersley.
Most of his earlier work was in gouache, but he now works almost exclusively in acrylics, which give a ‘softer’ feel to his illustrations, whilst retaining scientific accuracy. Although primarily an illustrator of birds and invertebrates, Andrew has a keen interest in all aspects of natural history, and paints whatever inspires him, including landscapes.
Originally from Bristol, Andrew now lives in Leicestershire with his partner Sophie and four cats.
