A self-taught artist, Francisco José Hernández Fernández began his career as an illustrator for bird guides and conservation magazines 15 years ago. For almost 10 years he managed to combine illustration and naturalist painting with his professional duties as a biologist specializing in the study and conservation of Iberian vultures. He turned full-time wildlife artist and illustrator in 2007.
In his sketches he try to capture and understand the essence of birds, volumes and movement, together with their habitat and its light effects. The definitive composition is finally produced in the studio where he works with different techniques, watercolour, oil, acrylic, ink and pencil.
He lives in south of Spain near to the Doñan's National Park, where he often goes out to observe and draw birds.
