


Raphael Dutra, a naturalist, lives in Minas Gerais, Brazil. For most of his life, he has been a bird lover. He spends considerable time in the field gaining inspiration for his work. He creates his plates using field sketches in pencil and composes his backgrounds of plants, fruits and flowers of each species’ respective habitat. He works in watercolors, gouache and acrylics. In 1997 he started his career as a freelancing bird artist working with Brazilian ornithologists creating plates for scientific works, field guides and illustrations for large corporations. Raphael's work can be seen in many collections in Brazil.
